Residential areas of Montreal

• Hello everyone,
  
  I am new to Montreal. This city is rather big compared to my hometown. I have no idea where to look for a nice apartment. I will start my new job next month, and really want to have a place to stay before I start working.
  
  Does anyone have any good advice/tips, for areas that are nice, not too expensive, and safe?
