The answer depends on whether your insurance in Canada allows it, and since Canada's health insurance is socialized, whether Canada has a treaty with Germany allowing this.
I'd contact your consulate, though I doubt they do.
I just bought cheap student insurance. (http://www.care-concept.de/). They seem also good for three to four month stays for anyone. Most of the documentations comes in one of six languages once you click, but maybe not the main page, so keep clicking!
If you are not working, or a student, travel insurance seems cheapest, which can be bought through a number of companies. World Nomads seemed very reasonable for stays longer than six months. Because I bought cheaper insurance from a German company, I didn't make sure the travel insurance is acceptable, but it's 3 million aud limit, seems to well acceed the $25,000 Euro requirement I read somewhere.
    Hope this helped!
