Where to live? Good, safe areas? HELP!

• Hello,
  I am a 23 year old female about to move to Amsterdam from Scotland for work. I am looking for appartments at the moment but I am confused as to where to look as I don't know which areas are safe, easy to commute from etc. I have only every stayed in the Jordaan while in Amsterdam but I doubt I can afford to live there! Any help or local knowledge would be greatly appreciated!
