Where to get medication in Norway

Pharmacies

The Norwegian pharmacy market, once government-regulated, is now free. This is the reason why the number of pharmacies has grown substantially over the last few years.

Most pharmacies belong to multinational companies. Doctors (as well as pharmaceutical companies) are forbidden to have any business interests in pharmacies.

For anyone suffering from a chronic illness or a disease, you will get a reimbursement for your medication (however on only certain drugs). You must meet the requirements which are set by the authorities.

In primary healthcare, patients have to pay for some of the expenses, but only up to a given sum (around 200 Euros, just to give an idea). Medicines in public hospitals are completely free.
