Want to learn arabic but lots of people discouraged me from learning this language. Is it really that difficult?

Yes it is!
The Arabic language is difficult - ask anyone who has tried to learn it. The United States government categorizes languages on the degree of difficulty for a native speaker of English to gain practical fluency. Category four is the most difficult; there are four of them. They are Arabic, Chinese, Korean and Russian.

Yes it's hard, but not impossible
Hello--
I've been studying Arabic off and on for 5 years on evenings/weekends. It IS harder than, say, Spanish or French. For me, the worst part was the script. If you spend a month or so learning the alphabet and really get it in your head, and don't rely on transliteration, that will be a big help. Then it's on to grammar...which is quite a bit different than English. But I think it may be more consistent. Arabic is actually pretty logical and doesn't have as many exceptions to the rules as English does.
The main thing is to suspend your English paradigm and accept Arabic as it is!Joz 05 Jun 2007, 05:01 - Report -

Russian is not on that list
He said the most difficult are Chinese, Korean, Arabic and Russian. Actually Russian is a hard langauge but it did not make the hardest group. The actual list is Chinese, Korean, Arabic and Japanese...with Japanese getting a special note, its the hardest language to learn for speakers of English. Thank goodness they are an ally!
They list the last category as requiring 88 weeks of study and one year in-country. (btw, each week is a full 25 hours of classroom time, so the total is 2200 hours of class room study.
Most people self studying do about 5 hours a week. So at the rate of 5 hours per week, you'll need 440 weeks (assuming no attrition)...which is why 99% of people who self study never succeed...they get frustrated at the lack of success after a few years, they don't realize they didn't have a realistic plan, and were studying at a rate that would bring them to fluency in over 8 years....
anyway so then you get the advice not to bother.
It's true, if you don't have plans to study like a madman...you might want to consider a category 1 language, which is much, much less time to learn. (Spanish being the best bet)Robert 10 May 2008, 05:09 - Report -

There is a phrase "Structure determines behavior... Unless you don`t know yourself" so yeah arabic language is hard but if u are in need - go for, if you discover yourself i guess you don`t need any language just you and your dreams which will becoming true in UAE like stars in Tibet.
