More than half of Maltese pupils progress from secondary school into higher education. Due to the size of the island, there is only one university and one vocational college. However, they both have a good reputation and the university is recognised by larger foreign institutions.
The University of Malta boasts four hundred years of history and a long tradition of scholarships and research in the subjects it teaches. Degrees are awarded in subjects ranging from architecture to economics. There are approximately 11,000 students and some 800 international students coming from 80 different countries (2014). These students are following full-time or part-time degrees and diplomas. The university today has eleven faculties and a number of interdisciplinary centres and institutes.
General admissions: Prospective students can apply to the University of Malta through an online process which can be found on the website. This online application process is available to students who hold local or overseas qualifications and who are applying for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Applications for entry into the University in February and October need to be completed by November of the previous year.
Fees/requirements: Tuition fees at the University of Malta vary depending on the course you apply for. Fees also change every academic year therefore it is best to check the University admissions document for up-to-date information (this can be found on the website).
Erasmus: The University of Malta offers an Erasmus scheme which gives approximately 300 students the opportunity to study abroad. All over Europe, the Erasmus label is regarded as a prestigious award signalling an individual's willingness to move abroad and embrace cultural diversity. Doing an Erasmus provides new tools, proficiency and a wealth of knowledge that is useful in today's highly competitive job market.
The MCAST offers vocational and professional training. The college is the main provider of all post-compulsory vocational training in Malta. It consists of many institutes that each teach a different subject from business and commerce to maritime studies. The majority of people attending the college are students on a full-time basis or apprentices who study part-time and train in their occupation during the rest of the week.
General admissions and applications: Courses start at a foundation level. You can begin a course at this level or, depending on previous qualifications you may hold, you can enter a course at a higher level. Application details can be found online at the college website. You can also download an application form there.
Fees/Requirements: Tuition fees vary at MCAST therefore it is best to get in touch with the college directly to find out about the current fees.
