  There are about 40 channels on the cable (depending on where you're located). Most of them broadcast in German, but four of them are in English: CNN, NBC Super Channel, MTV and BBC World. Also on cable (as well as satellite) is Premiere World.

  Maybe this helps: "By far, the most popular method these days to receive a large number of channels is to have a satellite dish installed. It is relatively inexpensive to buy the dish, LNB and receiver. There are a lot of package deals available in retail outlets. You may want to have a professional installer mount and align the dish. Make sure you have your landlord's permission to put up a dish. You will be faced with a large choice of receivers. The cheapest ones are the analog receivers. Somewhat more expensive are digital receivers. Many broadcast companies have already switched to the newer digital technology, but are still broadcasting in analog until the buying public catches up. If you buy the standard digital receiver that receives the standard "free to air" broadcasts you'll be able to pick up several English language channels, depending on which satellite your dish is pointed to. That's the good news. The bad news is that the channels you can pick up are pretty much limited to news, music, travel shops, some sports and shopping.
  
  If you want to get more English language channels then you will have to get a receiver and service that will allow you to pick up "encoded" signals. There are different types of "decoders" and decoding cards that will enable you to receive a variety of services. Europe's best pay-tv is Sky TV from the UK. Offering over 140 channels, all in English with the latest series and shows from the US, it truly lets the expatriate "feel at home".   I personally prefer cable - the advantage is that installation is easier - you simply have to plug the receiver box into your wall socket. The start-up costs are also lower - a digital receiver and initial subscription are less than satellite dish. Also, a cable TV connection usually comes with integrated high-speed internet which is an economic alternative to DSL internet via Deutsche Telekom.

• Stellite TV in Hannover

  you can buy a normal satellite dish, however it normally has to be one of the larger ones, depending on where you live in Germany. I live in Hannover and have a 90cm dish. You need to check out the footprint of the UK terrestial channels. If you live in the South, you may need a larger one. I get BBC and ITV using the Astra satellite. I have two heads on the satellite, one for German TV and one for British TV. When it is really stormy reception dissapears but I can count the times that has happend on one hand, so no big problems there. It took a while for the technicians to adjust the position of the head, but now it is in position, we have no problems. Hope that helps.

  I am also looking for advice how to get BBC1&2,ITV, Channel 4.We live outside Hannover (like Paul) and have BFBS (Brtish Forces TV)a mix of UK soaps with a splash of newsnight-! Having trouble with understanding the various cable, digital offerings out there. Found this website: newcomers-network.de choose telecoms section. All advice welcomed.

  Hi Margie, In order to receive English TV stations in Germany you will generally require a satellite dish which is aligned with the Astra 2D satellite at 28.2° E. This should enable to receive the various UK free-to-air (FTA) channels which include the BBC channels (BBC 1, 2, 3, 4 & News 24 including the regional channels), the ITV channels (ITV 1, ITV 2, ITV 3) and Sky News. Please note that several UK channels, including Channel 4, are encrypted and cannot be viewed without an appropriate decoder. A comprehensive list of all channels available on the Astra 2D satellite can be found on internet web sites. The channels available change on a fairly regular basis, however this affects mainly special interest channels (home shopping, gaming, religion, dating etc.) and the mainstream BBC and ITV channels remain transmitted on the same transponder frequency. As Kathleen already pointed out, in certain areas of Northern Germany BFBS / SSVC provide terrestrial broadcasts via a regular TV aerial for the British forces based there. These broadcasts can usually only be received by UK-spec TV sets, although some newer TVs bought in Germany may also be compatible. As Natalie mentioned, your location will dictate the size of dish and azimuth elevation required. Generally speaking, the larger the dish the better. Larger dishes provide an improved bad weather reserve thus avoiding the chess board effect when heavy cloud or sleet/snow is overhead. The quality of the various satellite components (LNBs, cable, wall sockets etc.) will significantly influence reception quality – cheap components can lead to a substantial loss in signal strength on the way from your dish to the satellite receiver. I know of people located as far south as Austria who can receive the UK channels on a 85cm dish, however I would personally recommend a 100cm or 120cm, depending on the location. In some cases, a separate dish for UK channels may provide superior reception. If you opt for the twin LNB configuration which Natalie describes, the second LNB should be aligned with the Astra 1D satellite at 19.2° E. I hope that I’ve managed to provide enough information without baffling you with science. It is however quite a complex subject.

  Hi Margie, I live just south of Frankfurt and have a 60cm dish and LNB both purchased in Germany, together with an old Sky box with an old disabled Sky card. This enables me to receive ALL the UK Freewiew channels, including Channel 4. You could probably find an old Sky box on Ebay etc if you can't source one from the UK. Good luck.

  Hi Margie, We live in Stuttgart and we have now a large satellite dish of 1,10. So we can get all available free programs you can imagine. You do not even need a Skybox! If you buy your satellite dish here in Germany you will find the right positioning on the package. And via internet you will get every information required. Since we have got the large dish we have not exoerienced any weather related problems. I agree indeed wth Paul, you need really good components to install the programs. And take yourself time and do not give up too early! my husband Michael needed more than two weeks! But the professional firms did not help us in any way as the said that they are only used to install our normal programs or Turkish television!
