The literacy rate in Colombia is around 90%. Education is mandatory until middle school and most people continue to study until the end of secondary education. Since 2012, all mandatory stages of education have been provided for free, and are subsidized by the state.

Children of expats moving to Colombia who don't speak Spanish will find public schools a challenge, but depending on your child it is a great way to immerse them in the culture and language. However, the majority of expats will choose an international school over local ones.

In Colombia there is a large variety of private schools, many of which are bilingual and/or international. The internationally recognised International Baccalaureate is available to study at many of them, along with a number of other course choices.
