Making friends in South Korea

  • I have been living for 6 weeks in South Korea now - and all my friends are foreigners!!! Why is it so hard to make Korean friends? Sometimes I get the impression that they prefer to stay amongst themselves. This is not really what I expected when I came here cause I would really like to learn something about the local culture.

    I've been in Korea for 6 months and haven't made a Korean friend either. I have two back home. I'm not sure what it is but i get the feeling they see us as transit friends (teachers that will just come through their country for a year). So, I guess it's hard to open up to people if you know they'll leave soon and knowing that you'll probably never see them again.

    I'm sorry to hear that, unfortunately most koreans are really shy, they might want to be your friend, but are too shy to even speak to you.
    It also depends on where you live in Korea, if you live in a small town you might have a hard time, but if you live in places like Busan or Seoul then you will make friends one or other time.
    If you meet a korean and you want to be her/his friend, then a good way to show them that is to give that person a little gift. it can be anything, a little cellphone decoration or a cute little key holder, that's mostly if it's a girl. Otherwise if the korean invites you to come to their house then it is really important to show your interest in giving a gift. So if your going to their house a good present to give is fruit or traditional korean 떡 (rice cake).
    Hope my advise helped!
    Just remember , maybe just because it looks like they don't want to be your friend it doesn't allways mean that they don't happy.
    So don't worry, I'm a foreigner that's been living in Korea for more than two years now, and I can speak korean quite well so I've got a lot of Korean friends and they are very sweet! big-smile

    In response to your discussion about foreigners and Koreans, I havent lived in Korea but abroad. I've met a Korean friends and I think end of the day its a language barrier and sometimes expressing yourself is difficult but I know its not a cultural barrier as much. If the foreigners are living in Korea then that on its own states the fact that they wish to learn about the Korean culture and appreciate it. Then again if you find them in bars is because they still need familiar background.

    Anyways, if you can help me find a friend of mine. His name is Yoon Soo Kim, he was in the Military in 1995 if you can please let me know how I can reach him or find a telephone directory to contact him. I dont live in Korea so that is a big problem
