Regulations for permanent & temporary residents
When you enter the US to take up permanent or temporary residence, you can usually import your personal belongings duty and tax free. Any duty or tax payable depends on where you arrived from, where you purchased the goods, how long you’ve owned them, and whether duty and tax has already been paid in another country.

What can you bring to the US?
If you travel to the US by air or sea, you’re given a Customs Declaration form (6059B) to complete by the airline or shipping line. If you cross into the US via road from Canada or Mexico you’re asked to complete it at the frontier. You must complete it in block capitals in blue or black ink.
