Splitting plates in restaurants?

• Hello,
  My husband and I are leaving Saturday for a 20-day trip to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Netherlands.
  Here in the U.S.A., we always order one main entree and split it. It is never a problem and the servers never make us feel "bad" about it.
  Is it frowned upon to split a meal in Austria?
  We will be in Vienna for 4 nights and I want to try different things at different places throughout the night. That is why we split.
  In Salzburg, we have reservations for the one night we are there at the oldest restaurant in Europe. Would they be okay with it?

  I think if you want to eat in very good and popular restaurants, where many people want to get a table and usually enjoy several courses throughout a meal...it would not be appropriate to eat just one course AND share this....
  ...but if you eat in a more common place, it would be ok....
