CONFUSED .... Aussie girl getting married to her UK partner what to do next ?

• I have been granted a settlement with intent to marry visa and have now moved to the United Kingdom to be married on the 25th of July. I was told by the UK consulate in Australia that once I am married to my partner (who is a UK citizen ) I would then have to take my marriage certificate and visa to the UK embassy to have it changed to a spouse visa in order for me to stay here for 2 years then I could apply for the ILR. My confusion is I have rung the UK border agency and was told that in order for me to do anything I would have to go back to Australia to apply for my next visa then another company told me it could be changed for a fee of 700 pounds I was not told this by the Austrain / UK consulate they said it was a simple changover.. I am very confused and am hoping someone can help me with this.
